Motion Picture Corporation of America (“MPCA”)
was founded by Brad Krevoy in 1986 to focus on producing, acquiring, and distributing commercial motion picture and television productions. Since its inception, MPCA has produced, acquired, and distributed more than 75 movies, including 21 major studio theatrical releases and 40 television and made-for-video movies. MPCA is best known for its ability to produce commercial feature comedies, including Dumb and Dumber, the Farrelly Brothers’ first feature film starring Jim Carrey, which generated gross worldwide box office of $250 million; Kingpin starring Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid, and Bill Murray; and Beverly Hills Ninja starring Chris Farley.
MPCA distributes its motion pictures in North America through all the major studios, with whom it continues to enjoy long-term relationships. Its motion picture and television projects have grossed more than $650 million worldwide in all media, earning the company its reputation as a leading provider of commercial motion picture product at lower budget levels and as an aggressive sales and marketing force with U.S. studios and international buyers.
In July 1996, MPCA and its motion picture library were acquired by John Kluge’s Metromedia International Group and operated as part of Metromedia’s Orion Pictures Corporation. Brad Krevoy managed Orion Pictures’ production, acquisition, and distribution of motion picture and television programming. Under the Krevoy-led management team, Orion Pictures was revitalized as a viable and respected studio and Krevoy oversaw the distribution of Golden Globe and Academy Award-nominated films Ulee’s Gold starring Peter Fonda and Prisoner of the Mountains directed by and starring Sergei Bodrov. In July 1997, Orion was sold to MGM/UA, whereupon MPCA’s management separated from Orion/MGM and exercised its option to reacquire the MPCA name and certain of its key former employees to rebuild the company as an independent entity.
Since its reorganization in January 1998, MPCA has produced 22 motion pictures, acquired a library of nearly 200 motion pictures, and negotiated extremely favorable financing and studio distribution arrangements. MPCA’s recent productions include the drama A Love Song for Bobby Long starring John Travolta and Scarlett Johansson, produced by Sony Pictures and released by Lionsgate fall 2005; Stephen King’s Riding the Bullet, based on his bestselling e-book, starring Jonathan Jackson, Erika Christensen, David Arquette, and Barbara Hershey released by Lionsgate fall 2004; the comedy Boat Trip starring Cuba Gooding, Jr., Horatio Sanz, Roger Moore, Vivica A. Fox, Roselyn Sanchez, and Victoria Silvstedt released by Artisan Entertainment spring 2003; Undisputed starring Wesley Snipes, Ving Rhames, Master P, and Peter Falk, directed by Walter Hill and distributed by Miramax Films fall 2002; and the sci-fi action film Slipstream starring Sean Astin and Vinnie Jones for Lionsgate and SCI FI Pictures. Most recently, MPCA completed production on two sequels to the popular Pumpkinhead horror franchise starring Lance Henriksen under rising star directors Jake West and Michael Hurst. MPCA also completed production of The Hard Corps starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Vivica A. Fox, as well as Second in Command, which also stars Jean-Claude Van Damme. Both films were released by Sony Pictures/Screen Gems.
MPCA’s upcoming slate includes the comedies Harv the Barbarian written by Carmen Finestra and Jack Handy; The Three Stooges written and to be directed by the Farrelly Borthers; Screen Gems’ sequel to Beverly Hills Ninja; as well as dramas Life and Death at 17 to be directed by Joe Dante; Taking Chance for HBO, which is based on the true story of a Marine killed in Iraq; anda sequel to the Oscar-nominated Mr. Holland’s Opus.
Brad Krevoy also co-produced the 1999 Peabody Award-winning and Emmy-nominated ABC television musical Annie for ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney (the series’ highest-rated offering of 1999, directed by Chicago’s Rob Marshall); the critically acclaimed STARZ! Pictures premiere Joe And Max based on the true story of champion boxers Joe Louis and Max Schmeling, starring Til Schweiger, Leonard Roberts, Richard Roundtree, David Paymer, and Peta Wilson, directed by Steve James (Hoop Dreams); and The Suburbans starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ben Stiller, and Will Ferrell, distributed by TriStar Pictures; and executive produced the MGM release 3 Strikes; and the multiple ALMA Award nominee The Elián González Story for Fox Family Television.
MPCA has established itself as an important supplier in three market niches: (1) the studio-distributed, star-powered theatrical feature film—especially comedies—produced at a lower cost than homegrown studio pictures; (2) branded movies in the horror genre from Stephen King and others; and (3) high-quality made-for-television and video feature films for such outlets as Home Box Office, Starz Encore, Columbia TriStar, SCI FI Channel, and Blockbuster, featuring a recognizable cast at a reasonable price. In addition, MPCA has produced theatrical releases for MGM/UA, Columbia TriStar, Miramax, Disney, Fox, Orion, and New Line, and has had a “first-look” deal with Paramount Pictures and MGM/UA.
